La Latina

Madrid's iconic tapas neighborhood and the Sunday-vermut capital of Spain. Medieval street plan, the city's oldest civic squares, El Rastro flea market, and the densest concentration of traditional tabernas on the planet. The bars on Cava Baja are mostly cataloged under Centro / Sol — La Latina here means the streets south and west of them: Plaza de la Paja, Calle del Almendro, Calle del Nuncio, Plaza de la Cebada, Las Vistillas.

Who it's for: Travelers chasing the canonical Madrid Sunday — Rastro flea market in the morning, vermut and tapas crawl in La Latina from noon, sunset at Las Vistillas. Anyone who wants the medieval street plan, the centenary tabernas, and the densest tapas density in the city. Couples and groups of two to four; solo travelers who want to drink at the bar.

Things to know

  • The Sunday rhythm is the defining experience: Rastro flea market 9am–3pm, then vermut hour (la hora del vermut, roughly noon–2pm) at the bars, then long Sunday lunch from 2:30pm. Plan a full Sunday around it, not a quick visit.
  • Most kitchens close 4–8pm. Spanish lunch is 1:30–4pm, dinner 9pm–midnight. Trying to eat at 7pm in La Latina is a frustrating exercise — even the famous tabernas will be closed.
  • Cava Baja itself is cataloged under Centro / Sol in this guide (Casa Lucio, Malacatín, Casa Revuelta, Taberna Tempranillo, Sobrino de Botín, Lhardy). Geographically much of Cava Baja is in La Latina, but the institution-tier tabernas are written up there. La Latina here means the streets around and south of Cava Baja.
  • El Rastro pickpockets work the densest stretches around Cascorro — front pockets and zipped bags only. The market is also Madrid's most counterfeited zone for fake leather goods.
  • Sunday vermut bars start filling at 12:30pm; by 1:30pm the popular ones are wall-to-wall. Arrive early or stand outside on the street with a glass — that's the local move.
  • Las Vistillas is the local sunset spot, especially good in spring and fall; in summer the terraces of the kiosk-bars are excellent for a beer. During the San Isidro festival (mid-May) the park hosts free open-air concerts.
  • Capilla del Obispo on Plaza de la Paja is open free of charge Wednesday mornings 10:30am–2pm (since November 2025). Otherwise it's guided-tour-only and books up. The Gothic interior is the best-preserved in Madrid.
  • August: many tabernas take a 2–4 week summer break. Always check before traveling.
