Ribera / Bilbao la Vieja / Guggenheim area

The reclaimed industrial riverfront that stitches together the Guggenheim on the Abandoibarra side, the Zubizuri and Isozaki Atea on the Uribitarte side, and the gritty-hip Bilbao la Vieja / San Francisco quarter across San Antón bridge. Titanium-and-limestone Frank Gehry curves at one end, 15th-century church and 14th-century bridge at the other, street art and Nikkei restaurants in the middle. Bilbao's most photographed neighborhood and its most rapidly changing.

Who it's for: Art travelers — the Guggenheim is the whole reason many first-time visitors come to Bilbao, and it earns the trip. Architecture travelers — Frank Gehry, Santiago Calatrava, Arata Isozaki, and Álvaro Palacios (Palacio Chávarri, if you count Ensanche-adjacent) within a 15-minute walk of each other. Younger travelers looking for the 'new Bilbao' scene — Bilbao la Vieja / San Francisco has the city's live-music venues, street art, Nikkei food, craft-beer bars.

Things to know

  • Metro Moyua (L1/L2) and Metro San Mamés (L1/L2) put you closest to the Guggenheim; Metro Casco Viejo (L1/L2) is closest to Bilbao la Vieja via the San Antón bridge; the tram stops at Guggenheim, Uribitarte, Pio Baroja, and Ribera.
  • Guggenheim tickets: book online 3–5 days ahead in peak season (May–October). Under-18s free. 50% discount 4–7pm. Museum closed December 25 and January 1.
  • The Puppy — Jeff Koons's giant flower West-Highland-terrier sculpture in Museum Square — is a permanent installation and free to see outside the museum. The 38,000 plants are replaced twice a year (spring and autumn); the 'in-planting' periods look scraggly.
  • Maman — Louise Bourgeois's 30-foot spider — is on the riverside of the museum and also free from outside. Best photographed from underneath looking up.
  • The Zubizuri (Calatrava, 1997) has a glass-brick walkway that can be slippery when wet. The Isozaki bridge extension added at the west end changed the original design; Calatrava sued and lost the right to force removal.
  • Marzana 16 and the Muelle de Marzana bar strip are weekend-afternoon and evening scenes. Weekdays are quiet.
  • Bilbao la Vieja (Bilbi) is safer than it was in the 2000s but is still gentrifying — daytime and early evening feel very different from late night. Keep to San Francisco / Aretxaga main streets after midnight; be aware around Zabala.
  • Nerua (1 Michelin star, inside the Guggenheim) requires reservation weeks ahead; the museum's other on-site restaurant, Bistró, is walk-in.
  • Mina moved from Muelle de Marzana 6 to Indautxu (near Hotel Ercilla) in autumn 2025 — the Marzana location closed. This record covers the neighborhood; Mina itself is now geographically in the Ensanche record and pending confirmation there.
  • Bilbao la Vieja Murals — the official Bilbao Turismo murals route has ~20 pieces by SUSO 33, Eltono, José Ramón, and other artists. Take 45–60 minutes to walk the loop from San Francisco street; the Bilbao Turismo website has a map.
