Ensanche (Abando + Indautxu)

Bilbao's 19th-century expansion across the Nervión — the Gran Vía luxury spine, the Doña Casilda park, Bellas Artes and Azkuna Zentroa, the city's Michelin-star density, the historic Café Iruña, and the two pedestrian pintxo streets (Diputación and Ledesma) that locals go to after work. Grid-planned, monumental, dining-serious. The opposite of Casco Viejo's medieval texture and the reason people fly to Bilbao for food.

Who it's for: Diners committed to Michelin-level cooking — Etxanobe Atelier, Zortziko, and the relocated Mina are all here. Architecture travelers who want the Doña Casilda park + Azkuna Zentroa (Philippe Starck) + Estación de Abando (stained glass) combination in a compact walk. Anyone using the Guggenheim as a base — Ensanche is a 5-minute walk from the museum. Culture travelers who value the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum (currently free during expansion works).

Things to know

  • Metro Abando (L1/L2) and Moyua (L1/L2) put you on Gran Vía; Indautxu (L1/L2) puts you on Alameda Recalde. All within 3 minutes' walk of each other.
  • Ensanche is where the city's Michelin stars live: Etxanobe Atelier (1★, Juan Ajuriaguerra 8), Zortziko (1★, Alameda Mazarredo 17), Mina (1★, moving to Indautxu in late 2025 from its previous Marzana location). Book 2–4 weeks ahead for weekend dinners.
  • Calle Diputación (2 short blocks off Gran Vía) is the pintxo epicenter — La Viña del Ensanche, El Globo, El Puertito. Trend more polished and slightly more expensive than Casco Viejo counters.
  • Calle Ledesma is the after-work pintxo-pote street — Thursday nights the whole street is packed with the office crowd doing the €2 pintxo-and-drink deal.
  • The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum is currently FREE during its expansion-works period (through the mid-to-late 2020s). Best cultural bargain in the city. Closed Tuesdays.
  • Azkuna Zentroa is free to enter (paid gym, cinemas, exhibitions extra). The 43-columns 'Atrium of the Cultures' by Philippe Starck is the reason to walk in even if you don't do a class or a film.
  • Café Iruña (1903) is not open all-day for pintxos — the pinchos morunos (grilled lamb skewers) are prepared at a special counter in the main dining room at specific times. Ask on arrival.
  • Bilbao-Abando train station's 1948 stained-glass panel (15m × 10m, by Miguel Pastor Veiga) is inside the ticketing hall — walk in even if you're not catching a train. Free.
  • Aste Nagusia (mid-August) — the biggest fiesta of the year has its main txosnas (fiesta bar tents) along the river next to Arenal, spilling into western Casco Viejo but affecting Ensanche pintxo bar crowds too.
  • Sundays are quieter — many restaurants close Sunday evening or all Sunday. Verify individually.
