Things to know

• Assume the coastal walkway is shut. A 900-metre section of the 절영해안산책로, from Busan Bogeon High School to below Isongdo Observatory, has been closed for slope-collapse stabilisation since 2023. Completion has slipped from May 2024 to February 2025 to 2026, and January 2026 reporting pushed it again into the following year. A short stretch near the sea tunnel reopened temporarily on 15 January 2026 with re-closure scheduled for May. Do not build a day around walking it without checking first.
• Huinnyeoul is a residential lane, not a viewpoint. It is roughly two metres wide, the houses open directly onto it, and it has one row of homes between the path and a cliff. Yeongdo-gu asks visitors to keep quiet and to avoid late-evening visits; local reporting describes ongoing conflict over litter, noise and parking. There is no equivalent of Gamcheon's orange paint telling you which lanes are yours, so the judgement is entirely yours to make.
• Do not drive to Huinnyeoul. There is no public car park at the village, the private lots are tiny, the road is two lanes, and illegal parking is the single biggest source of friction with residents. The free Huinnyeoul lot between Isongdo junction and Sinseon-dong community centre only operates Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays 10:00-18:00. Park at Namhang Market or under the Namhang Bridge and take bus 82 or 85 up.
• Yeongdo has no metro. Nampo (Line 1) is the nearest station and everything from there is bus or a long walk. From Yeongdo Bridge, buses 82, 85, 7, 71, 508, 6 and 9 serve the Huinnyeoul side; 508, 85 and 82 run from Busan Station. Allow more time than the map suggests — the island is bigger than it looks and the two ends are 9km apart.
• The island splits into two half-days, not one. The west side is Huinnyeoul, Namhang Market and the Kkangkkangee/Bongnae waterfront, all reachable from the Yeongdo Bridge end. The east side is Taejongdae and the National Maritime Museum. Trying to do both in one afternoon means seeing neither properly.
• Everything closes early and Mondays are dangerous. The Maritime Museum, Kkangkkangee's information centre and Samjin's experience hall all shut on Mondays; Jaegi Dwaeji Gukbap closes Mondays; Arp closes Thursdays; Momos shuts at 18:00; the Taejongdae Danubi train stops at 17:30 outside summer. There is essentially no evening economy on this island — plan dinner and drinks back in Nampo or Seomyeon.
• The National Maritime Museum is free, and that includes special exhibitions. Only the 4D theatre is charged. It is the best rainy-day plan in Busan and it stays open to 19:00 at weekends, later on summer Saturdays — most visitors never find out it is there.
• Vegans have exactly one good option and it is here. Arp holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and is the only vegan restaurant in Busan's 2026 selection. Everywhere else on this island is pork broth, fish cake and seafood — plan around it rather than hoping.
