Postojna Cave & Predjama Complex
Not a neighborhood you stroll so much as a two-site attraction with a small town attached: the great show cave and its park at the edge of Postojna, the cliff-castle 9 km away, and the handful of restaurants and museums travelers actually use between them.
Who it's for: First-time Slovenia visitors, families with kids, anyone doing the classic cave-and-castle day out of Ljubljana, and karst/nature nerds who want the science layer (olms, Expo, the museum).
Things to know
- The cave is a timed, ticketed tour, not a walk-in sight: book an exact slot online at postojnska-jama.eu (never third-party resellers), and arrive 30 minutes early — the train boards 15 minutes before departure and will not wait.
- Dress for the cave, not the surface: a constant 10 C and 95-100% humidity year-round. Bring a warm layer and closed shoes with grip; rain capes rent for about 6 EUR at the entrance. Showing up in summer clothes and shivering is the classic tourist mistake.
- To pair the cave and castle in one day, buy the combined 'Two Adventures' ticket (49.90 EUR, 2026). The two sites are 9 km apart; a park shuttle links them in peak season for combined-ticket holders, otherwise arrange a taxi at the ticket office.
- Buy tickets at the Hotel Jama reception to skip the ticket-office queue and get 10% off package deals.
- Seasonal add-ons: the Cave under Predjama Castle runs roughly May-September (the operator's own pages disagree slightly, June-August vs May-September, because of the resident bat colony's hibernation — check the current timetable), and Modrijan Homestead is open April-September.
- The Notranjska Museum in town is closed Mondays. The town empties when the tour buses leave in late afternoon, so an overnight stay buys a quiet, un-touristed evening.
