Amsterdam-Noord
The former shipyard sprawl across the IJ from Centraal Station: warehouses turned art studios, a giant white cinema on the waterfront, monthly flea markets in old dock sheds, and the best terraces in the city on a sunny day. The reason a certain slice of Amsterdammers stopped going out in Centrum.
Who it's for: Design and food travelers on their second or third Amsterdam trip. Anyone looking for the city's contemporary creative scene rather than the canal-ring museums. Cyclists (short flat rides between everything). Kids like the ferries.
Things to know
- Free GVB ferries run 24/7 between Centraal Station and Noord. F3 to Buiksloterweg (for EYE, A'DAM Tower, Tolhuistuin) is every 5–7 minutes and takes 4 minutes; F4 to NDSM-werf (for STRAAT, Pllek, IJ-Hallen) is every 15 minutes and takes 15 minutes. No ticket, walk on with your bike.
- Noord is 10 km east-to-west. Buiksloterweg (EYE, A'DAM) and NDSM (STRAAT, Pllek, IJ-Hallen) are 4 km apart — 15 minutes by bike, 25 by bus 391 or 34, painful on foot. Rent a bike in Centrum before you cross, or use the bike-share options at the ferry landings.
- IJ-Hallen runs one weekend a month at NDSM — Saturday-Sunday, 9am–4:30pm, €6 entry. Check ijhallen.nl before planning around it. Off-market weekends the NDSM slipway feels enormous and mostly empty.
- NDSM is deserted midweek in the low season — most restaurants open Wednesday-Sunday only, and STRAAT is the only anchor guaranteed open Tuesday–Sunday year-round.
- The Buiksloterweg side has more density: EYE + A'DAM Tower + Tolhuistuin + Polly Goudvisch + Il Pecorino are all within 400 meters of the ferry landing. If you have only one Noord afternoon, come here.
- Amsterdam-Noord is safe — it's residential and family-heavy — but the NDSM slipways in particular are unlit at night and feel remote. Get the last ferry back by 1am rather than trying to walk across the neighborhood.
- The Nxt Museum on Asterweg filed for bankruptcy in December 2025 and is trying to restart. Check before making the trip.
