Amsterdam

Jordaan

The former working-class quarter west of the canal ring, now Amsterdam's most postcard-photographed neighborhood — narrow streets, low-rise gabled houses, tree-lined side canals, dense concentration of brown cafes, small galleries, and Saturday markets. Gentrified thoroughly since the 1980s but still holding on to a scale and a rhythm the Grachtengordel doesn't have.

Who it's for: Travelers who want a walking day at low altitude — brown cafes, canal-side benches, small food shops, an art gallery or two, the Saturday markets. Second-time Amsterdam visitors. Photographers. Anyone recovering from the crush of Centrum.

Things to know

  • Anne Frank House is actually here (Prinsengracht 263), on the Jordaan side of the canal — it counts as Centrum in most tourist maps but its context is Jordaan. Book ahead six weeks; there are no door tickets.
  • The Jordaan is quiet on Sundays — most shops are closed and the market days (Saturday, Monday) are the busy ones. Sunday brunch cafes are the exception.
  • Cafes close early by international standards — kitchens stop taking orders around 9:30–10pm even in the busiest brown cafes. Come to dinner by 8pm at the latest.
  • Noordermarkt on Saturdays (organic food market, 9am–4pm) and Mondays (antiques, books, vintage, 9am–1pm) is the reason to plan a morning here. Lindengracht Market (Saturdays 9am–4pm) is bigger and less-touristed.
  • Nine hofjes (almshouse courtyards) are hidden behind unmarked doors in the Jordaan. Most are still-active residences with strict visiting rules — open weekdays 10am–5pm, quiet, no photographing residents' windows. Karthuizerhofje and Suyckerhofje are the easiest to visit.
  • Westerkerk tower climb is April–October only, guided only, book directly at westerkerk.nl. The top of the tower is the highest point in Amsterdam (85 meters) and looks straight down at the Anne Frank House annex.
  • Cycling in the Jordaan is intense — locals cycle fast on narrow streets and side canals are one-way for cars. Watch the red asphalt (bike lane) before you cross any street.
