Kilmainham & Phoenix Park
Dublin's 1916-and-independence pilgrimage site sits directly beside its biggest green space: Kilmainham Gaol's execution yard, the Royal Hospital's grand quadrangle turned modern art museum, then straight into 1,750 acres of Phoenix Park — Europe's largest enclosed city park, with wild fallow deer, the President's residence, and Dublin Zoo inside it. Institutional rather than commercial, this is a neighbourhood of monuments and open sky rather than restaurants and bars.
Who it's for: History travellers doing the independence circuit. Families wanting a full outdoor day (deer, zoo, bikes, a Victorian tea room). Anyone who wants to walk further than they meant to in genuinely open space, twenty minutes from the city centre.
Things to know
- Kilmainham Gaol is guided-tour-only and sells out daily — book up to 28 days ahead online; same-day cancellation tickets are occasionally released at 9:15–9:30am.
- IMMA's Great Hall and Chapel are closed throughout 2026 for the EU Presidency, though the galleries, grounds and outdoor guided tours continue as normal.
- Phoenix Park is free and open 24/7; only Dublin Zoo inside it charges admission. Bikes can be rented at the main Parkgate Street entrance for covering more ground.
- This is a spread-out, institutional neighbourhood — budget real transit time between Kilmainham and the far side of Phoenix Park, and don't expect much in the way of restaurants once you're inside the park itself.
- The park's antique gas lampposts along Chesterfield Avenue are still lit by the same family that has done the job since 1890.
