Firostefani & Imerovigli
The two kilometres of caldera rim between Fira and the open ridge, and the best compromise on the island. Firostefani is Fira's quiet northern continuation — you can walk to the bus station in ten minutes but sleep somewhere silent. Imerovigli, a little further on, sits at the highest point of the whole rim, which is why it is called the balcony of the Aegean: the same domes, the same drop, the same west-facing sunset as Oia, with a small fraction of the people. Neither village has a nightlife, a shopping street or a cruise-passenger problem. Both have Skaros Rock below them, which is the most interesting thing on the caldera edge.
Who it's for: People who did the research. Couples who want Oia's view and Oia's silence without Oia's prices or its 4pm sunset scramble. Walkers — the rim path runs through both villages and Skaros starts here. Anyone who wants to be within walking distance of Fira's buses, museums and restaurants without sleeping above a club. Repeat visitors almost always end up here.
Things to know
- This is the same sunset as Oia. Imerovigli sits higher on the rim and faces directly west, and locals send you here rather than to the castle. There is no queue, no 4pm positioning and no applause.
- Firostefani to Fira's bus station is about a ten-minute walk on a flat paved rim path — which makes Firostefani the single most practical place to sleep on the caldera if you are not renting a car.
- Atlantis Books is here now, not in Oia. It moved in winter 2024 to the Petros M. Nomikos Conference Centre in Firostefani, directly on the Fira–Oia walking path. Its hours are famously sporadic: roughly 10:00–22:00 in summer, noon to sunset in winter.
- Skaros Rock is a 45-minute to 90-minute return scramble from Imerovigli, not a stroll. Steep steps, loose gravel, exposed edges, no shade, and the area is prone to rockslides. Do not attempt it in flip-flops or in the middle of the day.
- Many Imerovigli hotels are 100–300 steps below the nearest road, and porters carry the luggage. If stairs are a problem, ask precisely how many before you book — the photographs never show them.
- There is no supermarket, no pharmacy and no bank in Imerovigli. Buy what you need in Fira.
- Restaurants here take reservations and mean it. Athenian House and the other rim tables book out days ahead in July and August, and unlike in Fira there is no fallback within walking distance.
- The rim path north from Imerovigli stops being a promenade and becomes rough volcanic trail. If you are heading for Oia on foot, that is where the real walk starts — and where the last shop and tap are behind you.
