The walled medieval core of white polished limestone — Stradun, the sea-facing ramparts, palaces and monasteries packed into a few car-free blocks. Ravishing and real, but a working stage set that fills and empties with the cruise ships.
Who it's for: First-time visitors, history and architecture lovers, photographers, anyone who wants the walls-and-Stradun set-piece — and people willing to get up early or stay out late to have it.
Things to know
Time everything around the cruise ships: be on the walls or Stradun by 8am, or after 5pm. Midday (11am-3pm) in summer is a hot, shoulder-to-shoulder crush.
Wheeled suitcases are effectively banned inside the walls and the streets are stepped anyway — carry your bag.
The limestone is polished lethally slippery, especially in rain or morning dew; wear grippy shoes, not smooth soles.
Inside-the-walls menus run roughly 10-20% above the same food a few streets out; the best-value konobas and the local scene are in Gruž, Lapad and Ploče.
Prijeko street is the tourist-trap gauntlet of touts with laminated menus — most of the genuinely good restaurants are on the quieter side lanes, not here.
Many bars, wine bars and the Buža cliff cafes are seasonal (roughly April-October) and several are cash-only.
Don't walk through town in swimwear — it can be fined.
