Two neighbourhoods that share a subway line and almost nothing else. South and east of Avenue Road, Yorkville is Canada's luxury district: the Mink Mile's flagships along Bloor, Victorian houses turned into galleries and jewellers on Cumberland and Hazelton, and a concentration of Michelin-starred kitchens found nowhere else in the country. West of Avenue Road, the Annex is red-brick Victorian houses, students, second-hand bookshops, a rock club with a cartoon mural, and a documentary cinema from 1913. The seam between them runs straight through the Royal Ontario Museum.
Who it's for: Anyone eating seriously — three Michelin one-star kitchens sit within a few blocks here, including the country's most decorated sushi counter. Museum people, because the ROM, the Gardiner and the Bata Shoe Museum are all within a five-minute walk of one another and two of them have free windows every week. Luxury shoppers, obviously. Architecture people, for Libeskind's Crystal, Casa Loma's Edwardian folly and three connected Victorian mansions turned into a pub. And anyone who wants both halves of the trade: a $16 museum and a $45 castle in the morning, a bagel counter for lunch, a starred tasting menu or a rock club at night.
